Each region of the country has its own natural and cultural characteristics.

There are in the south of Kazakhstan beautiful sky blue mountains, that sounds in Chinese Tien Shan. Kazakhs call them Alatau, which means multi-colored mountains. There are a lot of beautiful mountain lakes and numerous rivers flow down from the mountain slopes.

The Great Silk Road that had linked China, Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe passed through on these region. Therefore there are numerous historical monuments of this time. Here began the way to the conquest of the world by Genghis Khan, here died on the way to the conquest of China Temirlan, and here was borders of the ancient Persians and Arabs conquests.

Administratively the South of Kazakhstan is formed by three regions – Almaty region with the center in Taldykorgan, Dzhambul region with the center in the ancient Taraz and Turkestan region with the center in the world famous Turkestan, and also by two cities – Almaty and Shymkent.

In the Almaty region, seven big rivers flow into Lake Balkhash and valleys of its form an territory that is called Seven Rivers or Zhety-Su in Kazakh.

The Zhambul region is located in valleys of the Chu and Talas rivers . These deep at the sources rivers disappear in the Betpak-dala desert regions.

Turkestan region is located in the valley of the great Syr-Darya river, which flows into the drying Aral Sea. This area was historically the most populous and was the cultural center of ancient Kazakhstan.

Almaty with a more than 2 million citizens population is a modern cultural and business center of Kazakhstan.

The population of Shymkent in 2018 exceeded 1 million citizens and it became an independent administrative unit. Geographically it is located in the most densely populated part of Kazakhstan and is the third most important city after Almaty and Astana.
